Writing in Kindergarten
Coming to Kindergarten, students SHOULD be able to:
-
write their first name
-
-
write some letters
-
-
write numbers from 0-10
-
tell a story in sequential order
After a successful year of Kindergarten, students will be able to:
-
use drawings, dictating, and writing to state an opinion, narrate and event, supply information about a topic
-
with guidance and support, respond to questions, recall information from experiences to answer a question, gather information from teacher provided sources to answer a question
-
use digital tools to "publish" writing
-
write one syllable short vowel words
-
spell and write words that use letter-sound correspondence (ex. cat, fell, black)
-
begin to write one syllable long vowel words (ex. cape, bite, note)
What you can do at home:
-
encourage your child to tell stories, no matter how silly!
-
encourage your child to tell you the steps in sequential order to make or do something
-
encourage him/her to speak in complete sentences
-
a good rule is number of words should be same as age. ex. 5 years olds should be able to say 5 word sentences
-
-
encourage them to draw and write original stories or their impressions of a story that you read to them
